Hi !
Is there in W XP SP2 any program or command available to send a short
message to someone in the same LAN (knowing the recipient computer IP) (I
don't want to use third party software). As far as I can remember, in W98
there was somethig like that called winpopup.

You could use "net send". Open a Command Prompt and type

net help send

to see the syntax. Note that the Messenger service must
run on the receiving machine.

The "net send" that others have suggested uses something called the
Messenger service. Please note that this is NOT "Windows Messenger" nor "MSN
Messenger." It is a much older thing and is one-way only, unlike today's
instant messaging programs.

Also, a while back SPAMmers figured out how to abuse this service and many
machines now have it disabled. (And there's more than one way to disable it,
as well!) So just because the net send command exists doesn't mean that your
message will actually make it to the target computer.
