I have recently installed Windows XP Professional
Operating system. There are two folders, WINNT and
Windows. Do I need both or I can delete one for creating
more space. Apparently they have duplicate files.

Hi,

Did you upgrade from another Operating System? Generally, WinXP will install
to one or the other of those two folders.

Hi,

Yes, you can. You will not be able to delete the one that is actually in
use.

Thanks for a quick reply. I had Windows98 system and I
did a new installation of Windows Xp Pro. Since I have
two folders, WINNT and Windows, can I delete WINNT (or
smaller of the two) to free up more space in my ~8Gb hard
drive.

Make a check first to be sure: Ensure in Control Panel - Folder Options
- View is set to show Hidden and system files, and *not* to hide
protected mode ones. Then look at C:\boot,ini with Notepad (don't make
any changes).

If the lines in it have
.. . . . .partition(1)\Windows
then windows is installed in the Windows folder, if partition(1)\WINNT
it is in that.

The other one should not be needed - I would initially rename it and
make sure nothing complains for a few days. It was probably made as a
temporary parking ground for the system components during setup

Thanks Alex, I will try.
