WinME to WinXP Home update problems

I have a HP Pavillion 7845 with Pentium III 866, 256 MB RAM, Phoenix
Bios 2.06. It came with ME and worked o.k. for years. Now I want to
update it to XP Home. I read the docs online concerning the drivers
and programs not compatible with XP, and was able to run the XP Home
setup disk. However, it will not boot to the os. With no cd present
the WinXP screen will come up, then the black screen with the mouse
arrow, then it will immediately try to reboot. Next time, same thing,
but then it goes to the scandisk screen first and finds a file, usually
named dump236a.tmp or something like that, then tries to reboot again,
etc., etc.

I called Microsoft tech support and they couldn't help me. Couldn't
even boot into safe mode. They did suggest that maybe my bios should
be upgraded, and I'm trying to find out more about that from HP. Tried
to load XP into another folder (Windows2), but it still wouldn't boot.
Any ideas? Luckily this isn't my only computer.

Thanks, fumawg

Hi,

Two installs and both have failed tells me that you have a hardware
compatibility problem. It could be the BIOS, it could also be something
currently attached to the system. I would attempt an installation with the
system stripped to the bare essentials.

Thanks, Rick. Since I don't have an operational OS, I can't update the
bios, even with a startup disk, so I'm hoping that getting rid of the
some hardware will do the trick. If not, I may need to do more
upgrading than I intended with a new motherboard...!
