Having multiple screen resets ( 1 or 2/day), when viewing
the event log, noted most are logged as "winlogon"
unexpectedly reset... Occasional windows explorer resets
do occur, but not very often. What is the best way to fix
this? System is an Athlon 1900+XP on an ABIT KR7A-133
MOBO, with 768MB RAM (DDR2100). Dual HD's, C,F, & G on a
Maxtor (NTFS), and D on a Western Digital(FAT-32). Video
is an NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600 with latest drivers (ver.
52.16) I had posted a few days ago, about windows
explorer resets, but believe problem is this winlogon
issue as it occurs much more often...One bit of advice I
was given was to re-load Windows XP home CD and manually
run SFC/SCANNOW, but I've not tried this yet as I don't
know completely what it does....Ned

Hi Ned!

I had followed the thread you had started. I also started one of my own.
I've been having the same basic problem with Winlogon & explorer.exe. I
took the advice that Alex Nichol gave you (SFC /SCANNOW). So far (about
20 hours after running it), I haven't had the problem re-occur. I'm not
sure yet if it's gone but it's looking good.

It looks to me that SFC /SCANNOW will check all the Windows XP system
files. If it finds any that have been modified or corrupted, it will
automatically replace it with the original file from the XP installation
CD. On my machine, it took several minutes to run.

As I said, since then, I haven't had the problem occur. I'm not ready to
pronounce my system healthy though. I want to run it a bit longer to see
what happens.

Rick,
Thanks for the input. New here and wasn't sure
about "reposting" basically the same problem, but one
never knows...!!! I'll try the SFC/SCANNOW fix also,
sounds as if nothing wwill be hurt. I had forgot to
mention that I keep a tight reign on virus checking
(AVG), and use ZoneAlarm as well as SPYBOT on my
system...Ned

Rick,
@nd post. I just tried to "run" the SFC /SCANNOW, but it
doesn't want to run, and I don't "see" it when I browse.
I'm usually pretty good at this, but coming up short on
this one. My WindowsXP Home CD is an upgrade version, not
a clean install. I originally had Windows 98 installed.
Ned
(how, exactly, do I get it to run this SFC /SCANNOW
function??)

Ned,

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about SFC to tell you how to get it
to run if you can't find it on your system. I know that sfc.exe should
be in your C:\Windows\system32 directory. Hopefully, one of the MVPs
will see this and give you some assistance.

Start>Run>type "sfc.exe /scannow" without the quotes. Note there is a
space between .exe and /scannow. Put your XP cd in the tray first. Even
though it is an upgrade version, it should still work. If nothing runs,
then scan your system with a current (post-2002 version using updated
definitions) antivirus program.

Ok Rick & Malke, got it!!! I just had a "brain toot" or
whatever you want to call it. I was trying to find the
SFC/SCANNOW on the CD, not on my system (??? like I said
a "brain toot"). I found it, ran it, and so far, all is
well. I'll try and keep up with the post if it doesn't
work. (now I have to figure how you to "track" a specific
post, like I said , "newbee")

Glad it worked for you, Ned. To track posts (and to use Usenet in
general), use a real newsreader like Outlook Express (not a great
newsreader, but you already have it). Here's a Microsoft How-To about
setting up OE to read newsgroups:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/news/howto
default.asp

Note that the url above has wrapped in my newsreader (set to wrap at the
standard 72 lines) and you will need to enter it into your browser
addressbar on one line. Also, here's a link to an article about
newsgroups I wrote for my client mailing list:

You might find it helpful.

Cheers,

Malke
