Winhelp file problem

E

Eddy

We have installed a program that uses the winhelp.exe from
Win9x
When we want to look at the help files from within the
application, we get an error that this help file is not a
help file and we need another version of Help.
Opening the help file with winhelp.exe from XP results in
this error. Opening it with the winhelp.Exe from the
application works fine. Also opening it with wnhlp32 works
fine.
Tried replacing the winhelp file from XP with the one from
the application. But that doesn't work thanks to Windows
File Protection.
How can I fix this?
Thanks

The winhelp program in XP is called winhlp32.exe, and on my XP it's
version 5.1.2600.1106 stored in the c:\windows folder.

XP also delivers winhelp.exe version 3.10.0.425 in the c:\windows folder
.... probably for backwards compatibility ... i'm not sure.

Recommendations:
1. check which versions of these two programs you have
2. check if you application installed a bogus version of winhelp.exe
3. check if your help file can be opend by the winhlp32 program (I don't
have any know old hlp files available to me to try this for myself).
4. contact the maker of the application and find out their
recommendations for using their help file on XP.

you can replace, if you want, the XP help file. File protection is under
your own control. Windows XP doesn't prevent this. You need to use the
right admininstrator (or other priviledged) id. Purely in your control.
However, before doing that, ensure you know what version you have, and
are replacing it, and you know what you are doing regarding permissions.
