I would be grateful for some help. A friend has sent me a
data DVD and my machine only has a DVD player not a DVD
ROM reader.
Can anyone advise me on the sofware I need to purchase to
be able to read the data on the DVD?

A DVD player is what you will need.

Just open it in Explorer. It will be the same as a data CD, just more crap
on the disc.
