Two days ago my WindowsXP started acting up. When I log
in, it takes forever to bring up the desktop. When the
desktop comes up I check the Task Manager and it says
svchost.exe is using most of the processing time.
Eventually, I get a System Shutdown window that tells
me "NT Authority\System Remote Procedure Call service
terminated unexpectedly." It gives me a countdown from 59
seconds to shutdown. I also sometimes get another warning
window that says "Generic Host Processor for Win32
Services has encountered a problem and needs to close." I
can't find anything in Microsoft's Knowledgebase under
either of these messages.
Likely related to this is a display issue. I have an
NVIDIA card (shipped with the unit) and the resolution
somehow changed. In the process of trying to change the
resolution back, I discovered I couldn't because I
couldn't change the monitor type from "Generic Plug and
Play" to the monitor I have (also shipped with the unit.)
I have unloaded a couple of games that I thought might
have had something to do with it. I unloaded and reloaded
McAfee2004 thinking if it was a virus, it might find it on
reload. I ran the SpyBot utility last night to check the
registry. It removed a couple of things but nothing that
fixed the problem. I also tried reinstalling XP from the
restore CD (not a system restore, just a reinstall.) All
to no avail.
I have a DELL Dimension 4400.
I'd appreciate any suggestions from someone who has seen
this or knows what is happening.
