WindowsXP will not start

Error Messages at dos prompt are:

The following file is missing or corrupted
e:\windows\himem.sys

The following file is missing or corrupted
e:\windows\ifshlp.sys

Type the name of the command interpreter
c:\windows\command.com

The system stops at the A: prompt and pretty much will not
let you do anything.
The Boot CD works and brings up the entire system intact,
all apps running etc.

himem.sys and command.com are on the PC in
Windows/system32 folder. ifshlp.sys is no where on the PC.

There is no drive e:

Tried Repair Console. Tried system restore. Still same
problem. Ran anti-virus, nothing.

This is not a dual boot PC. PC has been working fine for
six months, problem started today.

Any ideas before I reinstall WindowsXP?

Greetings,

Try going into "Safe mode" by pressing F8 and choosing "Safe mode" on the
list. Backup all your important documents and files and reinstall Windows
XP.
