I have about 1.5 Gb in my "System Volume Information" folders. Is there a
way to delete these and get a fresh start by using my current Computer
system configuration?

When you turn off System Restore, all existing restore
points are removed, and you are no longer able to track or
undo changes to your computer. To continue to use System
Restore to restore your computer to a previous state, do
not turn off System Restore.

Turn Off System Restore

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:

Click Start, then right-click My Computer, and then click
Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

Click to select the Turn off System Restore check box (or
the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and
then click OK.

Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off
System Restore.

Turn On System Restore

To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
Click Start, then right-click My Computer, and then click
Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Click to clear the Turn off System Restore check box (or
the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and
then click OK.

hope this help

Thanks Raj! I am thinking of proceeding as you indicate, but wonder you or
anyone may know what the pro's and cons are of turning off System Restore?

Those are the restore points. If you want to clear them out, let
System Restore start clean too. Go to Control Panel - System - System
Restore. Check 'Disable System Restore', and OK, reboot. Now have
Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide Protected
mode ones and delete everything in the System Volume Information folder
on each drive

Start SR up again, and I suggest reviewing the settings for each drive.
There is not much point having it enabled on data drives, and on ones
with System or Programs I would reduce the space allotted if more than
say 1GB - I use 500MB, the minimum is 200 which will only handle maybe a
week of points. But the default of 12% of a drive seems too much for
its own good on modern large drives

Note that you can also on later occasions delete all but the latest
point by using the button in the 'More Options' page of
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup

Thanks for your help Alex,
I am doing what you suggested.

Turn off System Restore, to clear out these folders, as they store
your system restore points.
