I have windowsxp installed in a second computer that I bought from Best buy
to upgared from windowsME.
Now after a recent automatic update from microsoft I now gat a message
saying that my copy may be a conterfeit. We have been using this copy since
windows xp came out with no problem. What is mycrosoft trying to do make more
money??
How can I fix this problem? and has this happened to anyone else?
Thanks.

Use System Restore to go back before you installed the updates. Set your
Automatic Updates to download but let you decide when and what to
install. When the updates come back, untick WGA or Windows Genuine
Advantage and don't install it.

may be as simple as checking date/time. I had laptop that i had not used for
several months, update stated i was victim of piracy. I reset date/time
correctly, rebooted and prob solved.

I didn't state it was counterfeit

BestBuy sells counterfeit copies of XP? Since when? Do you have proof of
this or are you just making it up as you go along?

I have been to these sites as directed by the Microsoft directions and again
did what they said to do and guess what again nothing is corrected. I would
like to find out if they just want more money just say so and let me make my
own decision.
My box that came with the disk for xp has an autentic serial number but
anyone could make these.
Not all of us are computer experts, we just want to use these products
without so many problems. After we PAY for them.

Hello Mr Alias

I understand it a bit different as the poster wrote. The poster did not say he got his copy from Best Buy. He only bought a computer from Best Buy with Windows ME and then he installed XP which he had. See the snip below on his post

Unless you can unequivocally prove that your version of
Windows XP is genuine or bought from a "genuine" source,
such as receipts, credit card slips, etc., then it is
questionable. Of course, Microsoft wants its money if the
version of Windows in use is unlicensed. But Microsoft will
also give you a working Product Key if the version you have
was bought under extenuating circumstances.

OH, that's different. Sorry, I didn't see that.

No. Microsoft is not trying to make more money off you this way. They will
do that later when you upgrade to Vista ;-)

All second hand pcs should be wiped clean and the new OS installed
fresh. One should Alyways also own the CD for the OS they want to run on
any PC.

Haha, you have hacked software and can't get figure out how to get
around the Validation Tool? Come on, everyone knows the deal here!
See, MS does know what they are doing!
