WindowsXP dying

Ok, seriously, I will soon take my extra HD and my laptop HD, and find a
place to duplicate the original. What's happening is this:

Sometimes Windows XP starts, and seldom times it doesn't. The one solution
that always fixes this is restarting in safe mode and then once in a while I
let the system do the full run of disk check utility. Once and only once
did I get the dreaded BSOD, and the reboot took care of it.

I know the bottom line solution is to replace the HD, but I was curious if
anyone knows of something else that might fix this easier?

Thanks ahead, as always.

My XP is doing the same thing, but it is not the HD. My HD is in good
health. If anyone has a suggestion I would like to know.

My XP will stop just before the XP loading screen (with the green moving
bar) shows up, or the XP logo will display, but the "progress" bar is
blank. The system will hang here and go no further.

what makes you think its a hardware problem ?

have you run av software and and anti spyware software ?

i'd try making sure your hard disk is free from rogue software before you
copy it as you'll just have the same problem on your new drive.

Heya Daniel....

Yep..think you nailed it....replace the hard drive. It could be you
have bad sectors on the drive that XP is loading, or attempting to load
into, to a few other things.

If XP doesnt load consistently, or you get the BSOD.....or you gotta
load it in safe mode..even a virus could cause that...

How old is the hard drive? you hear any noises from it? does it click?
or make any noises other than the whirring you hear when the puter
runs?

If you scanned it for viruses...and nothing showed, or you reformatted
the drive, and it does the same thing....I would suspect its the hard
drive...

Slight correction, My XP will boot normally. More often than not, it
will hang. It is this inconsistency that is driving me crazy. When it
does boot, of course there are no errors to be found because guess what,
it booted fine!

I am facing the same problem as TRavis.

At least run checkdisk to look for errors. Software like GRC's SpinRite
can repair may HD problems.
Also, look for HD SMART reading software online. This will let you view
the HD's internal diagnostic readouts.

A reformat may be out of the question for some folks.

A solution to the problem rather than, just start over, would be preferred.

From your post "The one solution that always fixes this is restarting in
safe mode ...." - if computer starts successfully in safe mode and is
problematic starting in normal mode- it is a driver problem (99%).
Consider using bootlog at boot and evaluate last entry.

I hope Daniel can nail down that driver problem. In my case, even safe
mode will hang. So it must be a very important driver/file causing it.

Then why continue the crosspost to a WINDOWS 2000 group?

I was just replying to the original post. I didnt' even realize it was
being cross posted. Also, Win2000 and WinXP share enough similarities
that Win200o Gurus should be able to help us WinXP folks. Whats with
the Attitude?

W2K is sufficiently different from XP to be not relevant. And when you
clicked on "Reply" the message window shows the crosspost.

Anyway ... how about posting some useful info?

May Day,

In my case a maccafee Spam killer is causing the problem. I can not run
machine in safe mode not in command prompt mode neither in known last
configuration. So how can I uninstall MAccafee

I am thinking to re install the windowsXP.
Any body any suggestion
