I have a P4 1.4, 256 MB ram 40 GB Hard drive with 20 gb free space, the disk
is defragmentes regularly, and in good health, with Windows Xp (Sp 1).

the problem is, the PC boots and start nicely to Desktop, but when I try to
open any folder, or double click the dick icon to browse it, or try to start
any application, it stiops, showing a hourglass icon for a very long
time..say 5 minutes but I can run the Task manager during this this time.,
and after then with beep starts working normally. then it can handle tons of
application without any hassle.

I have cheked MSConfig and Task Manager, and no unwanted services or
application are running ..

can anyone help..? please..?
Thanx in anticipation..

What happens if you open task manager up before you open any folder
(CTRL+SHIFT+ESC). Go to processes and sort by descending processor usage?

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Nothing.. I can't see anything suspecious or using very high resources.
factually I have also tried closing all applications/ processes other then
critical system required processes, this didn't help either.

you're saying it's non-responsive right after startup, right? that's
explorer and the taskbar init'ing themselves, which can take a bit (tho 5
minutes sounds way long). Try these reg tweaks:

------cut------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"DesktopProcess"=dword:00000001
"SeparateProcess"=dword:00000001
;; this is for WINDOWS explorer (suposedly)
"BrowseNewProcess"="yes"

;; this is for INTERNET explorer (suposedly)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BrowseNewProcess]
"BrowseNewProcess"="yes"
-------cut---------

be careful that the above didn't line-wrap in this post; it's 11 lines
total. BTW, one of these settings is avail via "Folder Options", Seperate
Process I think. "DesktopProcess" makes the taskbar run as its own
process, and I think it's the real "cure" for this issue. Note that if
you pop up Task Manager you will see multiple instances of explorer.exe
now, as that's what these settings do; don't be alarmed!

Thanx Frodo,
I will try that, and hope after doing all this my PC will still Run. :)
Kidding..!
But can you tell me why I can't see any of the process is listed in the
Taskmanager..?

And tell you, I tried End proceess for Explorer and restarted it through
(new Task) Task Manager also, But still the process ( Initialisation) takes
too long..

Will it amke any difference in your SUggestions.?

Waiting and thanks again..
