WindowsXP Bootup Takes 6 Minutes?

T

TonynMI

I disconnected my PC and left it off for 10 days. When I
plugged it back in it took about 5 minutes to bootup. I
am using WindowsXP SP2 installed. Before I shut it down
it was fast/normal. Have done the following:
1. AntiVirus, Spyware, AdAware run - nothing
2. Defragged and AOK
3. Ran Bootvis and found out that:
DISK WRITE CACHING IS DISABLED.
4. Checked Systems, Hardware, Device Manager for
harddrive: WDC WD400EB-00CPF0 Enable write cache on disk
is enabled. Volume is populated 11 GB used 26 Free.

Any suggestions on how to enable - DISK WRITE CACHING?
Any suggestions on what I need to do to correct this
problem?
Internet is OK Normal Speed. However, anytime I access HD
it is very slow and this is the reason.
Thank you in advance.

This happened to me recently... It turned out my hard drive was dying - it
wasn't spinning at full speed, thus causing drive access to slow down...

How does the system perform in safe mode? Is drive access still very
slow...?

David: Tried Safe mode and still very slow. No change in
speed. I disabled all apps in StartUp Menu, restarted and
still slow.

One thing I did notice is in HD Properties Volume it is
not Populated. I do a Populate and OK. Then return to HD
Properties Volume and it is not Populated. I believe it
should remain populated, do you agree?

Any additional suggestions other than buy a new HD? Your
suggestions appreciated. If I have to buy a new HD I
will. Thanks for your help.

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Pattern File.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download Sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Dowload the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt244.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) Create a new Restore point

David: I did download and tried to run Sysclean. However,
I get an error that LPG$VPN.* is missing. However,
LPG$VPN.244 is located in the same folder that
sysclean.com is located in. Tried many times to execute
sysclean. No luck, any ideas?

FYI
I have run Adaware 1.05 will all updates, Sysbot,
NoAdware today with all latest updates and found no
virus/spyware.

Run AVG daily, too.

What am I doing wrong with sysclean for it not to locate
LPG$VPN.244? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!!!

Did you unzip the LPG$VPN.244 file? You need to. Here are the
instructions for Sysclean again:

TrendMicro's Sysclean is an extensive antivirus tool which has the
advantage of not needing to be installed. It requires two parts - the
scanning engine and the virus pattern files.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp - Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

The pattern files will be zipped - extract them with your unzipper (like
WinZip) or if you have XP, you can just open the folder. You need to
put the extracted files in the Sysclean folder you made.

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.

By the way, NoAdware is considered "betrayalware" and not recommended.
Here's a link to Eric Howes' fine site explaining that:
