Hello

During upgrading from Windows98 to WindowsXP Pro, I lost
the use of some programs.
Friends advised me to do a clean install to avoid these
sorts of problems.
I attemped to do that and chickened out.
After that my computer now boots up to a black screen,
giving options
Boot into WindowsXP or
Windows SetUp
F8 key will open up up other options.
Is it now possible now to boot straight into Windows?
If yes, what do I need to do to make it happen?
Maybe I need to do a clean reinstall.
If so, how do I go about it?
Thank you.

Hi ycloo,

If you select the option to boot into WinXP, does it work?

If yes, then all you need to do is reboot and load the setup option, then
cancel out of it. Reload the running system and edit boot.ini to remove the
setup reference from the [operating systems] section (start/run C:\boot.ini
for this)

If no, then you can either boot the WinXP CD and run a repair on the
existing installation, or complete the setup you already started. The former
option will retain your existing system, the latter will give you a new
installation where you will need to reinstall everything.

Incidentally, a clean installation was not the answer to your problem. To
get your programs to run may require one of these things:

1) A reinstall of the program under WinXP using the compatibility wizard in
Win98 mode (start/programs/accessories)

2) An update to or upgrade of the program to be compatible for WinXP. For
this you should check with the program vendor

3) Try running the program in compatibility mode, many of them will work
this way.
