WindowsUpdate locks the machine

I've used WindowsUpdate successfully on this PC about 5
times. Today, after update installed a few items and
requested a reboot, the PC will not reboot in regular mode
or in Safe mode or to Last Known Good. No restore floppy
is available. Is there an option to retain data files when
reinstalling from CD?
