WindowsUpdate doesn't...anymore...

F

Fred

According to BelArc Advisor, WindowsXP Hotfix KB828741 had failed to
install properly and needed to be reinstalled. I removed that
installation via Add/Remove, then reinstalled. I now notice that
WindowsUpdate starts normally, gets to where you click on "Scan for
updates", then freezes at 0%. I've done a couple of reboots, at this point.

I've just tried uninstalling it again, and reinstalling, being sure to
turn off Spybot S&D Teatimer and Norton. Same symptoms.

Any suggestions?

None of the suggestions helped, but I did make a strange discovery. One
suggestion at the "Windows Update Troubleshooter" page at Microsoft said
to repair Internet Explorer:

"Repair Internet Explorer

1. Open up Control Panel.
2. Open Add/remove programs.
3. Select Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools.
4. Click Add/remove.
5. Click Repair.
6. Follow the steps provided by the Repair Wizard.
7. Click OK"

Interestingly enough - I don't have "Microsoft Internet Explorer and
Internet Tools" in Add/Remove Programs!! There is only an entry for
"Internet Explorer Q831167". IE6 does exist on my computer and is
functional - other than Windows Update...

Huh?!

How about "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1"?

Why do I need to download and install something I already have? At
Internet Explorer "About", I find:

Fred;
Because there is something wrong if you do not have the entry in
Add/Remove Programs.
Without that entry, you can not repair as you already saw.

So...I need to just install (reinstall) IE6 over the top of the existing
installation?

F

Fred

OK...going to that site led me to download "ie6setup.exe", about a 479kb
file - an installer stub, or some such? I ran it, it d/l'ed and
installed less than a 1M file, and was finished. No changes, tho.
Still no IE6 in Add/Remove, other that the "Q" entry. Gonna have to
find someplace to d/l the entire IE6 file and try from there.

Interesting coincidence - I had just found tha page and am, as I sit
here, running SFC. I had already doen it before, but I figured I'd try
it once more, Failing that, I'll go with the rest of the suggestions -
probably end up repairing Windows.

News at eleven!

Unbelieveable!!! F***ing Microsoft, anyway!!! Tried "Method 2" (edit
registry, reinstall IE6)..."The software you are trying to install has
not passed Windows XP logo testing and will not be installed."!!!
Excuse me?!! @#$%&*!!! Multiple attempts, same results. Guess I'll
drop back 10 and punt - to "Repair WindowsXP" ("Method 1"). But it'll
be tomorrow - after I calm down again. Geeeeeeeeeezzzz-o-pete!!

Guess a repair of XP is out also: "Do not perform a repair or in-place
upgrade to repair a component or program that is not currently
installed. If you can, use the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control
Panel, or reinstall the component or program instead of Windows.

Let me see - can't use Add/Remove and I can't reinstall the component or
program....guess I'm screwed! See me? See me frustrated?! :(

Mañana...

Man, oh, man...2 out of 3 times I try to do the update, the download
stops at 3748kb of 7420kb...have to end install and that takes about 7-8
minutes to accomplish! Anyway...renaming edb.log didn't help, as did
renaming the Cat2 folder. Registering suggested .dll's went fine, but
didn't help, and cryptographic services was running. However...what
could be a ray of hope...while the Microsoft Root Certificate is present
and valid, the "NOLIABILITY ACCEPTED" is expired (1/7/2004).
Unfortunately, the other computer I have access to does not have that
certificate (WinME). Off to search Microsoft support for that
certificate. Be back later..

I can't find anything pertaining to updating the expired "NOLIABILITY
ACCEPTED" certificate. Could I simply delelte that certificate and live
w/o it?

I have the same certificate listed with the same expiration date. But
it hasn't caused me any problems.
