"To get the latest patches, consumers can type in
windowsupdate.microsoft.com or, as Microsoft would prefer, go to the
main Microsoft.com page, where they can find information on downloading
patches as well as on setting up a firewall and installing antivirus
software."

Exactly my thought. There are a bunch of links in the os itself that take
you to windowsupdate.microsoft.com (which is the real site and has been all
along, windowsupdate.com was just a redirect page to the real page). Just
use the links provided by the os. I don't think I have ever typed in
www.windowsupdate.com in IE to try to get to the site. Just always use the
links provided in the os or IE.
