I've been having problems with WindowsME which is VERRRRY slow. (Explorer seems to be fine). Last night I tried to run the Maintenance Wizard. It was really struggling and I couldn't get past the "Scan Disk" step. Messages kept flipping back and forth from "checking folders" to "Checking file allocation tables". Couldn't defragment the disk either. Seems to have been acting weird ever since I installed Norton System Works but could just be a coincidence. Can anyone out there help me, please or am I screwed

Thanks
Jill

Hi Jill:
Even though you are in the wrong News Group...try this:
Boot into Windows "Safe Mode" on start-up (ME is usually
a matter of pressing F8 when booting). It sounds like you
need serious defragging. Run ScanDisk FIRST--completely--
make sure you check "fix errors". Depending on your hard
disc, it could take well over an hour (size matters). Then
run your defragmenter. There are other ways, but it
sounds like it could also be your start-up items may be
taking too much system resources. Go into "System
Resources" in your "Accessories" application in
the "Programs" area and click on "Tools" in the menu bar.
Click on "Selective Start-up" and carefully disable items
such as sound features, CD rewriting capabilities, etc.
It is okay to experiment. But, do NOT close
down "Explorer" or "Sys Tray"--those two are important.
Read about this process: there are plenty of references
under "system resources low". You could also spend $30+
and add more memory; won't hurt a thing and could help
significantly.
