Windows mail keeps trying to compact the the files. It keeps trying and I
get errors. How is this fixed? It's the most annoying thing as it doesn't
quit and I get another error. How do I get it to compact the news/mail
files? Never had this problem with OE.

Use www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/ to compact and repair the database. Then open
and close WinMail and allow it to compact.

I clicked on download at that site and all I got were 2 JPGs and 2 GIFs....
and no exe. Where do I get the actual exe from to run and compact the files?

Whoops, had to use IE7 to get the exe. It wouldn't download using Mozilla
FireFox. :-/

Thanks. I think that little utility worked.

OK, it only worked one time but evidently it didn't compact the files at
all, and now when I close WMail the same thing keeps happening. It wants to
compress the files and can't. How can this be fixed? Isn't there any MS
techs here anymore? This is the error:

Unfortunately Windows Mail has been pretty much abandoned by MS since
about July 2006. Windows Mail has some corruption issues which will
never be fixed.

There is a rather laborious way of resetting Windows Mail.
Follow this procedure:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html
Scroll down to the section "PROBLEM TWO: How to Backup and Reset
Windows Mail ".

Even if you manage to fix the problem for now, it will probably come back later.
Frankly, you'd be much better off simply upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

"will b. dunne" wat is the problem this time? about your windows mail.

Several problems that don't look like they can be fixed and this is a
business computer. What a mess. We should never have replaced the old XP
machines.

It looks like you got it fixed in another thread. 3rd party program
interference again.

WMUtil only compacts the database files. The messages don't need
compacting.
