I am looking to upgrade my current Windows 98 edition. I
intend to do so within a budget. With that being said, I
am looking for a Windows edition that will suit me best
for what it has to offer within what I am willing to
spend. I have not been able to find the product
information about Windows XP that I am looking for. I
would like to compare the XP home and professional in
regards to what features and programs are offered. I am
aware of the advancements of the Professional edition in
comparison to the Home Office. I am looking for program
information such as: MSWord, Access, Powerpoint and other
software information pertinent to making the best possible
purchase decision. Will you be able to give me rundown in
regards to what programs are included with those editions
as well as the differences between them? Thank you very
much for your attention and for your prompt reply.

XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects,
except that Professional has a few features (mostly related to
networking and security) missing from Home. For most (but not
all) home users, these features aren't needed, would never be
used, and buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of
money.

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

Neither Windows XP, XP Home, nor any other version of Windows,
has ever come with any of the programs you mention, nor with any
other significant application software.

If you want these programs, you need to buy Microsoft Office. Or
you may possible find a good deal from vendor who sells a
computer bundled with Windows XP as well as Microsoft Office.

Greetings --

The two versions are identical when it comes to stability, and
device driver and software application compatibility, but are intended
to meet different functionality, networking, security, and ease-of-use
needs, in different environments. The most significant differences
are that WinXP Pro allows up to 10 simultaneous inbound network
connections while WinXP Home only allows only 5, WinXP Pro is designed
to join a Microsoft domain while WinXP Home cannot, and only WinXP Pro
supports file encryption and IIS.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately.

See http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
for the list of things that are in Pro only. In addition Pro will
support ten simultaneous connections in a network - Home only five

Unless you see something as Pro only which you realise you *need* - and
I think that unlikely coming from 98 - stick to Home and save on your
budget.

Also be sure that you have an adequate configuration- you need *more*
than the officially recommended 128MB of RAM. Unless you have about
256MB; a 400 MHz plus CPU and about 5 GB of disk space free at the
moment, I think you would be better to put things off until budget will
allow a major upgrade of the machine.
