I had to reformat my Toshiba laptop using the recovery disk, which came
with the computer about three years ago.
I tried to use my wireless card so I could go online and get all the
windows updates again but it won't work.
How can I get connected? I don't have a phone or cable. I only ever
use wireless, at cafes and libraries.

Use the Toshiba Drivers disk so that you can get your wireless working
again. You could also use the WIRED connection in case you've lost the
Toshiba wireless drivers.

Did the wireless card come WITH the Toshiba, or did you buy it separately?
(What model Tosh?)

Then take your laptop and the wireless card to a friend who has Internet
connectivity and a cd burner (or have a usb thumbdrive with enough
capacity to transfer the files) or to a local computer repair shop and
have them get/install the drivers for you. What else did you expect to
do? You have to get the drivers from somewhere. If the wireless card
came with the Toshiba, you need drivers from Toshiba. If the card is
third-party, you need drivers from that mftr.

Quick question. Where is the Windows XP part of the problem? You don't
have a security issue without an Internet connection. It seems you have
a hardware problem related to your wireless connection and need to
contact the folks that have the drivers for it.

Sorry, I didn't read that part, so, your only option is to call Toshiba
or borrow a friends connection to download them.
