Laptop locked up when I was installing the new version of
MSN Messenger, and when I tried to restart I got the "safe
mode" screen. No matter which option I select, it then
goes to the Windows Startup screen, and gives me this:
STOP C0000218 Registry File Failure
Cannot load file
\SYSTEMROOT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE
corrupt, absent or not writable
Then it begins dumping my physical memory. When that's
done, it does it all again, in a cycle.
What can I do? I'd hate to lose all my data, but if that's
my only recourse that's okay -- but I thought you could
only install Windows XP Pro (or Home) once and have it
activated!
