Windows XP won't shut down

I am unable to do a normalshut down of
my computer. I have loaded Windows XP over Christmas and
about a month ago, it would not shut down. I go through
the normal shut down it ignores the command. However if
I put it in standby and then revive it and do a shut down
from there it works. I have cable internet connection,
but they say it has nothing to do with them.
