windows xp won't shut down

Helping in-laws with computer. YIKES!!! Problem: Windows
XP Home Edition will not shut down. When turning off
computer, computer screen shows logging off but the
system never turns off.
Help??
 
I am having the same problem...on both shutdown and
restart. Seems to hang up at "Windows is Shutting Down".
Jim's site (see other reply) does not have anything to fix
this. I have made many registry changes to help, but to
no avail. Have re-intalled XP twice....still doing it.
Currently working with Compaq for help, but nothing yet
(have tried for three days). Will let you know if I come
up with something.
