Tony

I am trying to connect a windows XP computer to a windows
2000 domain. All I am doing is connecting the XP box to a
Shared folder on the 2000 Server Domain. The domain is
judicial.local and the share is court.
The share on the server is part of a Domain DFS with two
computers.
When i connect I connect with the drive letter F:
\\judicial.local\court
I have tried just \\judicial\court But it doesn't work.
When I click on a file it asks to Open of Cancel

I can click open and it works great but I don't want it
asking me this everytime I try and open a file.
This is for a customer and I need to get this done has
fast as I can. I know why it's doing it but I don't know
how to fix it..

Please help!!

The NeBIOS method won't work since DFS under AD is a DNS based method.
That's why \\judicial.local\court works and \\judicial\court doesn't. The
latter believes it's a machine name and not a domain name.

Thanks for your reply.

I am not useing NetBIOS.. I am only using DNS. DNS is
setup and running great. I was running windows 2000 on
older computers befor. And now we are upgrading and all
the new computers have windows XP Pro.

Anything else anyone can think of that might help me?? I
am not at the place of business right now but I do have
VMware setup with two servers and an XP pro client and
it's doing the same thing. So I can try anything..

Thanks =)

There are 2 servers connected with AD and the shares
connected with DFS. I have 7 client computers connecting
at all times. 2 laptops that connect sometimes.

If just using DNS, then the more reason that \\judicial\court will not work,
since it's assuming it's a hostname or NetBIOS computername you are trying
to connect to. It's just like me saying \\computername\sharename. It will
think that "judicial" is a computername and not a domain name.

If using Win9x or NT4 clients, you'll need the DSClient software installed
to participate with DFS.

Hey Ace Thanks for your reply

I am using Windows XP for the client computers and
Windows 2000 Server on my servers.

I have DNS setup and I am using \\Judicial.local\court
for the share. As you know the shares on my servers are
connected with DFS.

My question was. When I connect one of the clients to the
server using \\judicial.local\court

It works great but when I click on anything to open it on
the server it askes me if I want to "open" or "Cancel"..
I don't want it to ask them everytime they open something
from the server. I don't understand why Windows 2000
doesn't do it but Windows XP does..

Please help me

Thanks! =)

Oh, I see. My misinterpretation of your post. Sorry. I couldn't understand
what you were saying. Thought it was a connectivity issue.

As for this open/cancel dialogue box, I'm not sure where that is set. Sounds
more like an Internet Explorer download setting (yes, they are tied in
together). So sorry I can;'t help there. Maybe posting this in the IE groups
to see if there are any hits unless someone else responds here.

Got one question, why let your users use the server for this? Unless it's
the admins...

Happy Holidays!

Well there are two server.

The first server is called thejudge and the second is
called thejudge2

Thejudge is the main server and thejudge2 is a backup
server just in case the main server goes down. That's why
we have DFS setup connecting all the shares togeather.

THere is court, drivers, software, mhadmn and some others
that they need to have. But they need all of the shares
to work all of the time..

Do you know what I can do to fix this?? I'm going over
there friday, Jan the 2nd to setup there new backup
server (still running on windows 2000 server) and fix any
problems they are having with the new client computers.

Thanks

I found out how to fix my problem.

On the Windows XP Pro computer. If you right click on
Internet Explorer and go to Properties. Click on the
Security tab and then click on "Local intranet"

Click on "Sites" and then click on "Advanced..."

After that you will see a place to put something

I typed in (for my test computers) \\test.local

Now it works great. I can click on a file on any share
and it works great. Doesn't give me the Open or Cancel
button. I love it!! =)

Thank you all for your help.
