Windows XP will not shut down

When I try to shut my computer off through the START, TURN OFF COMPUTER, SHUT OFF features, my computer freezez on the blue "Windows Is Shutting Down..." screen, and never actually shuts down. This started after I got the sasser worm, and downloaded symantec and widows updates to kill it. The worm is not affecting my computer any more, but this shut down problem is stumping me. What can I do?
