windows xp will not boot - driver irql error blue screen of death.

i am hoping someone will be able to help me with a pc problem i have.

3 days ago when booting my pc i got the blue screen of death just after the
windows xp home logo comes up. The system then continually reboots itself but
windows won't start.

The error was driver_irql not equal and it mentioned physical dump and the
file viamraid.sys.

Since the error Windows will not boot in any mode (i.e. any of the safe
modes, normally or using last good configuration).

My pc is windows xp - the motherboard is a asus KV8-MX, there is 2 gig of
ram. Its a 160GB Sata Hard drive.

Things i have tried but still have the problem :

cleaning inside the pc
putting the hard drive on the other sata connection - it is recognised but
still windows does not boot.

Removed 1 ram stick and then the other - still same error.

Running windows recovery options to repair windows.


Tried to install new via drivers after downloading from website - used
windows xp boot disc and the f6 option.

I installed windows in a separate folder c:\windows2 - when i boot this
install of windows the pc works fine and i have been able to access all my
files on the hard drive (thankfully i have been able to back everything up).

From the working install of windows i have run chkdsk, disk defrag and also
tried installing various via drivers. When running chkdsk it got to 14% and
just hung. When running disk defrag the computer just rebooted once it got to
a certain point. Note that when trying to install via drivers one of these
the computer just hung and i had to reboot subsequently this 2nd version of
windows would also not boot. Has my hard drive broken?

I tried renaming the file viamraid.sys to oldviamraid.sys.

Does anyone have any ideas of what might be causing the error and how to
resolve it? Anything else i can try? I am almost at the stage of considering
formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows - i have everything backed
up but i would prefer it if i could fix it without doing this as i don't want
to have to reinstall and set up all my software.

You need to post complete copies of Error Reports.

Please post a copy of the Stop Error Report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have
solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

Going by a recent experience of mine, Windows would not start, booting up
brought me to a black screen with the message NTLDR is missing. I tried
installing Windows XP Home SP2 and from memory I think the setup passed
the Eula then the installation said there was no hard ddrive.

I think a or some boot files may be missing. I had a VIA Raid1 setup but I
had been fooling around in the bios and I had raised voltages to maximums
and so on for +++, oh dear, the PCI Sata addon card was spitting sparks to
in the end near the center of the motherboard to the tune of a clacking Sata
hard drive. Gee that was spookie, I never moved so fast in all my life. FOr
a whole month I thought the clacking was fan doing something odd.
I had Seagate Disk Wizard on a bootable CD and booted form it, formatted
the hard drive for 9 hours then reinstalled XP. Its been going fine for 4 or
5 days now.
I looked at the clacking hard drive in Seagate Disk Wizard and Disk Wizard
said it could not pass the short DST ?? test or the Long Tests so I have put
it aside for now. I may try to format it with Disk Wizard later.

I'm having the same issue, My pc just crashed and then wanted to keep
restarting no matter what option I choose. I got to system recovery after
trying everything else, went to format the drive, it crashed... Now it won't
even let me into command prompt so i can install over the top or retry system
recovery. All it will do is start to enter system recovery, then crash. I
tried a new install with XP but even that won't allow me in, it restarts
itself after it loaded up!

HELP! I'm about to chuck this thing!
