WINDOWS XP w/SP2 & ALL UPDATES CAN'T OPEN

Good Morning,

I'm having to type this on my notebook because my WinXP desktop w/1024 RAM
and 120GB HD can't open. Startup hangs at the screen which shows WindowsXP
and the L-to-R pulsing "thermometer." I can't even get to the Welcome screen
prior to the musical notes and finally my desktop.

The only software installed in eons is IE7 about 2 months ago, so I'm
worried that I may have contracted a nasty virus? And if so, how can I
eliminate? Looks like my CA eTrust may have stopped updating definitions, so
I tried Safe Mode w/Networking to install/run Panda Software's free online
scanner, but forgot that the Windows installer won't run in Safe Mode :/

I would greatly appreciate any/all help!!

Thank you in advance!

I can, indeed, boot into Safe Mode, but the screen is jumping so much, I have
to really squint to find the selection for that. Earlier when I went into
Safe Mode with Networking, the screen was still and clear, but now it rolls
and jumps, making it difficult to pinpoint Safe Mode, but it's worth a try!

THANKS!

Goob
