Windows XP vs. Win2000 wireless issue

G

Guest

Hello all,
I have a "quandry" with my wireless network that I hope someone on this
forum can help with.

I have a dsl modem to a Win XP computer that connects to internet. I have a
WAP device connected to that computer and two computers with wireless
adapters...one Windows XP, and one Windows 2000. Both computers connect
successfully to the wireless network (2000 through the linksys brand utility,
XP through the wireless XP config utility). However, I can only see shared
folders and access the internet through the 2000 machine. Attempts at
finding the network shares in the XP laptop and accessing the internet result
in "not found" and dns error messages.

Any ideas on why the 2000 works with the same wireless settings and the XP
doesn't? Any hints on resolving this would be MOST appreciated as I am
stumped.

Thanks in advance,
James

James,

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities too. A firewall
problem, where your DNS server isn't trusted, could cause a problem with DNS,
and give you your Internet access problems.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Thank you for the reply Chuck. I went ahead and disabled firewall (only
currently using windows xp while I get this running) but was not able to
rectify the situation.

Per your instructions, I have included the ipconfig /all and browstat status
output's from all three machines. Also, please note that I have tried both
setting a static IP (as shown below) and "Obtain and IP..." without success.

<SNIP>

James,

To start, LAPTOPVEGARYAN needs to use DHCP and get an address and other settings
from vegaryan-5x4iyj. With ICS:
# The LAN address of the server will always be 192.168.0.1.
# The LAN addresses of the clients need to be assigned by the server. ICS is a
software based NAT router.

So enable DHCP on LAPTOPVEGARYAN, rerun browstat and ipconfig, and let's see the
updated versions. Then we will go from there.

Per your instructions, Chuck, here is the updated output. I am able to
connect to the wireless network but in acquiring a network address, it
appears to just auto assign an ip. Further, I am unable to see the computer
(pinging from ICS server and from the laptop).

Again, many thanks for your patience and help,
james

Per your instructions, Chuck, here is the updated output. I am able to
connect to the wireless network but in acquiring a network address, it
appears to just auto assign an ip. Further, I am unable to see the computer
(pinging from ICS server and from the laptop).

James,

OK, that's a start. So the initial problem (but not the last I have to warn
you) is that LAPTOPVEGARYAN is not getting an IP address from vegaryan-5x4iyj.

You have a lot of reading to do. First, ICS is not a good solution in many
cases.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/ics-is-ok-but-you-can-do-better.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/ics-is-ok-but-you-can-do-better.html

Next, both compaqryan and LAPTOPVEGARYAN are running NetBEUI protocol, in
addition to NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NBT). NBT is all that you need; adding NetBEUI
just complicates things.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking-and-alternate.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking-and-alternate.html

Now, the NetBEUI / NetBIOS Over TCP/IP argument doesn't affect DHCP, but ICS
does. ICS provides the DHCP server, and when ICS can bind the Ethernet
connection on the computer, and issue IP addresses directly thru that connection
(to any computer connecting there thru Ethernet), that was relatively simple.
But when you combine ICS with WiFi, it's a bit more complicated. The fact that
one computer is getting DHCP, but another computer is not (and are you actually
swapping the same USB adapter between the two?) is disconcerting, to say the
least.

My best recommendation is that you get a DSL modem that provides Ethernet, and a
router. Connect the AP, and vegaryan-5x4iyj, to the router.

If you can't do that, then we have to look at the differences between
LAPTOPVEGARYAN and compaqryan. And you'll want to get a second USB adapter so
you can test both simultaneously.

Wow. Thanks Chuck. As I have already spent a goodly portion of my life on
this, I believe the NAT router setup is the solution for me :) Thank you
very much for all of your help on this issue.

As an FYI follow-up to your question ("...and are you actually swapping the
same USB adapter between the two"), yes, I was simply moving the usb adapter
between the two machines. In fact, to eliminate the laptop hardware as a
possible issue, I went so far as to swap hard drives (one running windows
2000 and the other running xp) on the same laptop (laptopvegaryan) with the
same usb wireless adapter and had no problems on the windows 2000 hard drive
but was not able to connect when running the windows xp hard
drive...frustrating to say the least.

Anyway, thanks very much for your patience and courtesy in helping me with
this issue...if there is a way that I can write a "favorable comment card" to
Microsoft to futher give you kudos, let me know.
