Windows xp vs Vista

I have a major problem. We need to buy another computer. We have valuable
software, exclusive to our needs that cannot run on Vista, why should we have
to pay upwards of $300 to get XP on a new computer? It is a dictatorial
company that does not allow the customer to purchase what it needs. We need
XP not Vista.
What can be done about this? Do I contact my Congressman? Do I contact the
Feds about monopoly? Do I take an ax to my Microsoft pc or just buy a MAC?

Contact a local system builder and have them build a computer for you with
the OS you want. And many of the OEM's still sell computers with XP. Lol
"contact the Feds about monopoly". Is this how you go about solving all
your problems?

So, go elsewhere.

I know you can't possibly be serious about a) congress b) feds c) axe....and
if you have software that won't run on Vista, I imagine you might have a few
tiny problems trying to run it on a Mac.

So, that said, go to Dell or HP or any of the major vendors and buy a new PC
running XP. Nobody there will force you to buy Vista. If you can't see an
option for XP on their web pages, call them directly to order.

Vista just came out, and most people I know agree that it's going to be a
while before we deploy it on our business workstations.

well, you could buy a computer with the MAC operating system or one with the
Linux operating system, so where is your problem? Trouble is, all of those
companies do charge for their products. How dictatorial. I think your
taking an ax to your pc and buying a MAC is a wonderful idea.

Maybe switch to de-caf and take a few deep breaths and go outside and
smell a rose.

If you check around, you will find computers with XP. Look in the Yellow
Pages for a small PC store that will custom build it for you or check
the business section of Dell and HP's web sites.

Your Congressman loves trolls;-)

I would think you would just go buy a PC with WindowsXP installed, it
would save you from getting yourself all worked up over a non-issue.

If, for some reason, you are unable to purchase the computer of your choice
with XP and if your software does not run in Vista and there are no Vista
versions of that software you may still be able to run the said software on
a Vista box.

How, you ask.

Awhile back, Microsoft had a program where you could "downgrade" your
operating system by giving up your CD key and getting a new one for an older
OS. If you were running XP, you could get a license for 2000, etc. I dunno
if they are still doing it, but it would be worth a try. I imagine they
would, given the record of Vista.

This isn't the first time someone in your situation has had a problem. The
government has sued Microsoft countless times and won, but nothing really
changes.

You may still be able to get a computer with XP by calling a vendor
directly. Businesses RARELY upgrade to the latest OS from Microsoft right
away, so this is common. Very recently an article stated that a huge number
of businesses are still using Windows 2000. Many computer companies realize
this and still ship computers with older operating systems for that very
reason. I seriously doubt that major companies are going to just fully jump
on board and alienate their customers by only offering Vista.

You could also buy a Mac, in which case you would have a choice at least. I
don't know exactly what you run, but you may be able to transition slowly to
the Mac over time. Macs can also run Windows. As long as you don't use 3D
software or have software with excessive hardware demands, you can even run
Windows WITHIN the Mac OS.
