Windows XP very slow after update

Yesterday I installed service pack 2 from a Microsoft CD.
Everything was very slow. It took too many seconds
between the time I double-clicked on a program and when
it finally showed up -- times between 30 and 180 seconds.
So today I uninstalled, and all is well again.

I should note that Windows XP as first installed is
noticably slower than was Win 95.
