Windows XP verses existing data entry created in Win 95/98

A neighbor purchased a new PC with Window XP, she does data entry at home, her existing files would not run on Windows XP so the vendor installed Winows ME on her new PC as the solution to the problem. Common sense tells me that she should be able to use her existing files using Windows XP. What is the answer?

they were created in.
