Windows XP Updates

Gerry Atrick

I have just set up a new PC and this is my first experience of Windows XP.
It is version 5.1 with Service Pack 2 and I have installed a number of "high
priority updates" as recommend via the Windows Update facility. However,
there is also a list of 6 recommended optional updates plus one hardware
update.
The recommended updates have the following reference numbers:
KB904942, Update for Windows XP
KB914548 an "update rollup" for Media Centre 2005
KB829019 MS .NET framework 2.0 x86
KB909520 MS Base Smartcard Cryptographic Service Provider package
KB 90993 Windows Media Connect 2.0
KB 896344 Update for XP

The optional hardware update relates to Intel PRO/1000PL Netwprk Connection.

I have no idea as to which of any of these I ought to install or indeed if
the order of installation is important.
Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's best to not allow XP to update Device drivers from MS
Update - Ever.

The recommended updates are usually for "Extensions" of the
Operating System that not all users will need or make use of.
Sometimes they address isolated problems that only apply to
these extensions, like Media Player. It's hard to say that you
should not install them - but some like a .Net framework may
be required for some applications to run. Most will have some
kind of mini-explanation of what functionality/fix they provide.
You can de-select them from the list, so they don't appear once
you determine if they are needed. I believe the option box text
reads "Do not show this update..."

The other updates are

Best practise is to download and install the updated hardware drivers
for your system from the various concerned hardware manufacturer's websites.

If you have only XP then there is no need for KB914548 an "update
rollup" for Media Centre 2005.

If you don't run any application which requires .NET then again there is
no need of KB829019 MS .NET framework 2.0 x86.

Regarding KB909520- If you do not have a smart card, you do not have to
install this update.

No need of KB 896344 either in your case.

If you are still following your thread, it has been suggested that you can
deselect by removing the tick at the left - the small box will then be
offered 'don't show this update again'
Put a tick in there and when you leave MS Updates all the 'don't show again'
should go into the 'Restore Hidden Updates' - just in case you need them
later.
