Windows xp update just completed

Hi. We did a windows update in the last few days. We now
cannot access the internet. We also have lost about all
the fuctionality of the windows start button, so I know of
no way to get to my files. The internet attempts
say "server not found".

A local person suggested I get a copy of "winsock xp fix"
which I did, using another computer, put it on floppy, and
ran it from the floppy in the problem computer. It is an
executable and seemed to do its fixing and said it was
done.

It fixed nothing.

Any suggestions?

can you ping the DG? can you ping a public IP? can you ping yahoo.com? or
post the result of ipconfig /all here.

Walt,

what exactly does that mean? It sounds like a much more
fundamental problem than losing Internet access.
