Does anyone know if there is a difference between Windows
XP Pro purchased in Europe (UK) and US?
My son wants to buy a laptop in England, but I am not so
sure it is a good idea?

By default when installing a UK copy of XP Pro it will use American keyboard
and region settings (at least it did on the PCs I've installed it on). I
can't see why there would be any difference in XP, but you might have a few
issues with laptop - XP regional settings for UK (simply a switch in Control
Panel to flip it over to US), UK power supply (would need a US power unit,
normally easily obtained), pre-installed software for internet access via UK
ISPs (pretty easy to remove), TV output might be PAL only (only a problem if
you want to use a TV rather than a monitor or the laptop's screen, although
normally the output mode is switchable in the drivers). You might want to
check pricing though - it's possible that the US price will be significantly
lower for the same specification of laptop.

Thanks!
UK has the same power as US, besides this laptop can handle
dual power. The price is very good. I guess I will be able
to hook it up to my DSL network at home.

UK power is ~230V AC. US is ~115V AC. They're not the same. Added to that is
the different plug configurations. I guess so long as the mains unit for the
laptop is switchable you should be OK.

I have a laptop bought in the US with XP Pro installed.

Runs fine on my home network. The ONLY annoyance is no Pound sign -
only $. It cost in $ what I would have paid in Pounds in the UK so I
can live with that.

Yes, but most laptops can handle either.

A new power cord costs just a few dollars.

Yes.

One bought in England will have the same version of Windows as in the
US. It will though have a UK layout keyboard. That is not usually that
much of an inconvenience (it will still have a $ key) , but be aware of
the point - it is not usually easy to change on a laptop
