Windows XP taskbar problem

Hi, I have a problem with my laptop, when i minimise a window it just
disappears and dosent appear in the taskbar like it normally should, also
when i open a program it dosent appear in the task bar as well. Its been
doing this for a while now and im getting quite annoyed having to use the
Alt and tab buttons to switch between windows,
Any ideas on how to fix this would be much appreciated
