Windows XP Stopped Checking for Updates

Until recently, I've been able to automatically check for
updates to my Windows XP Home SP1 on my computer. Now I
get the following error every time I check: "Error!
Unable to check for updates on this computer." What
gives, and how do I get past this incorrect response so I
can again automatically check for updates?
