Windows XP Start up Problems

P

Hi
My PC boots into XP Pro SP3 fine. I can click on the start button an
go into programs. However the problem i'm having is with my interne
connection. It takes approx 1-2mins before i can connect to th
internet. I get a message in the right hand corner after a while
telling me that my firewall is turned off and also i get the yello
update icon telling me that windows is downloading updates 0%. Onc
this comes up it takes about 10-20 seconds before both disappear and
can then connect to the net.
Any ideas?
Thank

Cable? DSL? Dial-up?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

It's important you run your firewall!!! Do the following:

Start | Control Panel (switch to Classic View) | Windows Firewall | On |
OK

The other issue is merely that your Windows Updates are automatically
downloading. This is normal. If you prefer to have more control, do the
following:

Start | Control Panel | Automatic Updates | "Notify me but don't
automatically download or install them."

Then when *you* choose, download the updates. If you choose the critical
updates, you should be fine.

Sorry, a bit misleading. The firewall says it is off and then th
message disappears. This is when the internet is accessible. Althoug
it says the firewall is off, it automatically comes on after 1-2 minute
from start up

What version of Windows XP is installed i.e. Home Edition, Professional
or ????.

What is your computer make and model?

Are you using an external drive? If yes some details please.

You have problems with two programmes involved with indexing and
searching indexes. These can be resource hungry!

What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Hope this helps.

I am having this EXACT same issue, I was thinking it might have to do
with Avast anti virus, so I uninstalled it and still have the same
symptoms

The challenge for today is to guess the 'issue'! :). There will be a bonus
if you also correctly guess the 'symptoms'.
