Windows XP stalls

When I startup my computer, it starts okay but takes at
least half and hour to respond when clicking the icons or
start menu, once it is fully loaded. I was wondering if
there was any advice you could give me to stop this
problem. I tried the system restore points and many other
things, but nothing seems to work.

Go to my computer,L.click the hd,file,properties,tools,
check the box,fix file system errors auto,close out,
restart computer.Use the disk cleanup utility in tools,
then defrag utility after the restart.
