I have Windows XP Professional and everything loads just fine at start up.
The problem occurs after start up, where the system "stalls" for about fifty
second and then you can open a program.
Anybody knows a reason for this?

Thanks,
Sergio

Do a spyware/trojan/virus check, if all your expected programs are already
loaded when this happens.

It is waiting for something that runs at startup. Possibilities:

You have a connection to a LAN using DHCP on the LAN - and it is not
present (timeout is around a minute)

You have an Antivirus program doing a partial scan of the system at boot

You have something else taking its time to initialise - Zone Alarm for
example
