I have not begun to download SP2. Has it really been released? I have gone to
windows update and it only will let you get SP2 using auto-update (which I
have turned on already).

b) Directly download from microsoft web site

Thanks for the help. I do have auto-update turned on. MS problem? Also, I did
try to download from the website but it told me I could only do it through
auto-update. Will try the link though.

Thanks for your constructive criticism, but I did follow directions.
Auto-update WAS turned on. For some reason it was not attempting the
download. Been online during on and off peak hours. Looks like they may be
having problems there. I just downloaded it from MS and installed it. So far
no problems. Prolly have to tweak it a bit, since I now have 2 firewalls
running (until I turn off the MS version).

No, keep MS SP2's firewall and lose the other. That reduces maintenance
and improves overall reliability.

XP SP2 only blocks incoming requests. If they are configured correctly, there
aren't any problems. I have both running behind a wireless router. And my
Apache server is working now too. Redundancy is not necessarily a bad
thing......especially given MS's track record.

With a good virus and adware checker, that's sufficient. The advantage of
using an intrinsic firewall in the OS far outweighs any of the other issues.

Could you re-broadcast your statement to all the lazy sods (mainly business)
PC users, who send virus e-mails out to all and sundry. A firewall that
notifies the user, that something in his/her PC is trying to contact the
outside world, is definitely an "other issue" that needs attending to. IMHO

Like many others on this forum I was very cautious about installing
SP2 on my machine. I have an extra PC and decided to upgrade this
machine as my test case. It ran Windows 98 and I went to XP Pro (legal
copy) with SP2. The only two problems I had were with one program I
use for my Ham Radio operations, and an update to this program
resolved that issue. The second problem was with an old sound board,
non-brand, that I could not get new drivers for. Went to an old Sound
Blaster 16 I had on the shelve and that installed without any problem.
After a few days I'll try my main PC.
