Windows xp sp2 sometimes fails to start correctly

Shiva

Hi,

Windows XP SP2 sometimes hangs on startup. It always occurs when the windows
logo is being displayed. The progress bar of the logo stops moving and the
small red light of the harddrive is burning constantly.
After pressing the reset button, windows usually starts up, though a message
is displayed asking me how to start windows (normally, safe mode etc.)
'cause previously it failed to start correctly.

Some more info:

- motherboard P4VT8+
- Intel 3.4 Ghz processor
- 1 Gb RAM
- my videodriver is not digitally signed; however, it is the latest driver
provided by manufacturor of the video card
- windows xp never hangs after a correct startup, it always occurs during
the process of booting (windows)

Any idea's?

Thanks in advance!

1. Look in Event Viewer for clues. Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter]
2. Have you always had this problem? If not, what changed?
3. Do clean boot troubleshooting:

Clean Boot in Windows XP

Report back with results. This will help pinpoint troubleshooting.

Thanks for your reply.
1. Look in Event Viewer for clues. Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter]

I've taken a look in the Event Viewer and I do notice one error:

The ZESOFT service failed to start due to the following error:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

However, this error occurs every time I start the computer. I do not notice
any other error event (in the system, security or application part) occuring
just before the hangup
2. Have you always had this problem? If not, what changed?

Yes, I've had this problem from the beginning
3. Do clean boot troubleshooting:

I've carried this out. H

I have disabled this starting service in msconfig.

I've carried this out. Hopefully it helps. Time will tell cuz the problem
happens every now and then.

Googling for Zesoft brings up some links indicating that this is
connected with the Bargain Buddy malware. It is not a Windows service.
You should clean up your computer (instructions at end of post).

From the beginning of owning the computer? Well, let's make sure your
machine is clean first. After you've done all the cleaning, if you
still get the problem post back. Make sure to tell us the results.

Go through these malware removal steps. It is crucial that you use
updated tools and do all scans in Safe Mode.

1) Scan in Safe Mode with current version (not earlier than 2004)
antivirus using updated definitions.

Before you remove malware, get LSPFix (or WinSockFix for XP which you
can get from MajorGeeks) - see links below.

2) Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware. These
programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
There is a new version of CWShredder from Intermute. I would not
install the other Intermute programs, however. Alternately, there are
CoolWebSearch malware removal steps at SilentRunners.

Be sure to update these programs before running, and it is a good idea
to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode. Make sure you are able to see
all hidden files and extensions (View tab in Folder Options).

If the malware remains even after you used Ad-aware and Spybot, you can
scan with HijackThis. HijackThis is an excellent tool to discover and
disable hijackers, but it requires expert skill. See below for
HijackThis links, including sites where you can post your HJT logs. A
combination of HijackThis and About:Buster works well in removing the
About:Blank homepage hijacker. Again, this is an expert tool and
novices should get help with it.

3) If you are running Windows ME or XP, you should disable/enable System
Restore after the system is clean because malware will be in the
Restore Points. With ME, you must disable System Restore completely.
With XP, you can delete all but the most recent (presumably clean)
System Restore point from the More Options section of Disk Cleanup
(Run>cleanmgr).

4) Make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update.

5) Run a firewall.
