Hello, I am having an issue with my computer and after searching in
here and trying to do whatever I can find, nothing is working. What is
happening is that Internet Explorer will not open. I try to open it;
the mouse turns to an hour glass and then nothing. Some other programs
are not working as well (example, Yahoo Messenger... opens but whenever
I try to do anything, it closes and exits completely). I tried
uninstalling SP2, but I was getting an error message, something about
wrong language or something (I am not on the computer right now, if
needed I can get the exact message). I also tried to download a full
copy of SP2 and installed it, thinking it would fix whatever files were
not working... but didn't change anything.
It all seemed to start after I installed SP2. There were some viruses
on the computer at one point, but I got rid of them and haven't had
any problems with that since. I don't know what to try next, like I
said, I searched on here, other sites and Microsoft itself and I can
not find an answer that works. I read about something in the
registry... and I would go in there if I knew it would work, but it
makes me nervous to edit that.
Does anyone have any ideas? Feel free to reply or to email me
(e-mail address removed)
Anything would be great... ill try.
Thank you,
Jay

First once SP2 is installed thier are other updates that follow thru
windows update, also before you install SP2,you should go to run, type:
cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart, type:EXIT From here,
install xp cd,boot to xp cd,recovery, select 1 for C: Press enter key for
password,type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru,type:EXIT Let xp start,remove
cd.Also,after SP2,run disk clean up utility,then defrag.

I have tried Ad-ware and spybot, and also the microsoft one to remove
everything they find. I have not however tried to use that HijackThis
thing. I will have to try that when i am at home and see if that will
show me (and when i say me, i mean the people at the forums) anything
to help.
I am nervous about rebooting with the orginal XP disk. I dont beleive
it will, but i dont want to loss everything on the computer with an
install. I have seen it before, but that was maybe because the wrong
options were selected or something. But i may have to try that if i can
not figure it out any other way.
Since i can not open Internet Explorer, i can not go to windows update,
but i have set them to be sent to me automaticly to be installed, so i
am still staying current on the updates. I was hopeing that SP3 would
fix this, but that is not do out for another year.
Thank you for your help, any other tips would be great also.

Have you read, and followed, the recommended MS procedure for
installing SP2? If not, that's 99% likely the problem. Too much
to explain so I'll let you go read it for yourself.
