Windows XP SP2 Installation failing: Can not copy comsvcs.dll

I reinstalled my XP operating system and is trying to get the service pack 2
update.

It downloads the file and tries to install but ultimately fails with and
error saying 'can not copy comsvcs.dll'.

Any help is really appreciated.

Are you trying to install SP2 update from a download or one of CD's
issued by Microsoft in 2004? It can be easier to install from the CD and
many people have them.

Are you trying to install SP2 update from a download or one of CD's
issued by Microsoft in 2004? It can be easier to install from the
CD and many people have them.

You do have to pay for the CD now but it is a good investment. Of course
these CD's can be used on any computer so if the OP has a friend with
one no cost need be involved.

I am downloading the update using aotoupdate. I don't have the CD.

Thanks for posting the link. I'll dowaload it and try again.

One thing though, I am having truouble during the installation hot
downloading .... with automatic update it downlods the file and starts to
install .... after a while it comes up with the error message that it failed
the installation because it couldn't copy the file 'comsvcs.dll' from
c:\windows\system32.

Would having downloaded the update file in my PC help for this situation?

I would remove it and try again. What type of internet connection do you
have?

I tried few time and comes back with the same error.

I have cable internet connection.

In Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates I have Automatic not
checked and have checked "Notify me but don't automatically download
or install". When notified I always commence the process by selecting
Start, Help and Support, Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows
Update and opt for a Custom install.

When you get the option go for Save to Disk and install later when
offline.

I downloaded and saved the file in my laptop, disconnected the internet
cable and tried to install it but unfortunately getting the same error 'can
not copy comsvcs.dll from c:\WINDOWS\system32'.

Is there a copy of comsvcs.dll in the system 32 folder?

I would try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes
and hit Enter.

Then try again to install the SP2 update.
