Windows (XP SP2) Explorer problem

Yesterday I decided to move my webhosting and in preparation I copied all of
my data via ftp from my old webspace to my hard disc.

When I open the folder containing the downloaded data everything seems OK
but as I navigate through the structure of the folders sometimes Explorer
simply closes and restarts the desktop session (not a shutdown - just as if
you closed Explorer in TaskManager and then restarted it from the Run menu
item).

It is very odd as it seems to happen at random. Sometimes individual folders
are fine sometimes they shut Explorer.

I have run a boot time CHKDSK on the drive and it shows up no problems at
all.

I have tried copying the folder - but the copy exhibits the same problem.

I have looked at the Application and System logs and there are no entries
relating to this behaviour (in fact there are no errors or warnings at all).

I recently (last week December) did a completely clean reinstall of Windows
XP SP2 and so far this is the only problem I have had!!

Any ideas as to what is going on and how to fix it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like one more example of the Windows Explorer crash and auto restart.

Some folks have it crash more dependably, many find it works fine.

Many folks find none of the suggested checking fixes this.

For some incomprehensible reason it seems that almost none of the
Windows Explorer crashes leave little love notes behind in the logs
to help anyone understand why it crashed or what to do about it.

Hundreds have reported Windows Explorer crashes beginning with the
installation of SP2. If you want a long laundry list of things
you can try to see if you might have a miracle and find a cause,
use google to search for my followups, use my email address in the
advanced groups search, in this group since August. That will tell
you lots of things that have been claimed to be the cause, but 95%
never report having found a solution to this.

I tried for months to help get Microsoft support to diagnose the
cause of this so that it might someday be fixed. Apparently that
isn't in their job description.

My sincere apologies. I hope you have better luck
