Windows XP SP2 Connection Problems

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this as it's beginning to drive me mad.

My mum and dad have recently got a new computer and have been trying to
install broadband. Everything seems to work fine apart from the internet
connection. They have a BT Voyager 105 modem connected by USB. Initially XP
SP1 was installed and the modem seemed to cause real stability problems
(very slow response of everything, random crashing). It was possible to
connect to the internet, although it was often very slow. I tried
uninstalling the modem and updating to XP SP2. After reinstalling the modem
the computer is working perfectly well and fast apart from the internet
connection.

The modem seemed to install fine and when you hit "connect to internet" it
verifies username and password very quickly and shows as being connected.
The first time they connected up it was possible to view web pages for a
very short period of time (less than a minute probably) but then everything
stopped working. Now when they try to access web pages it just gives a "page
cannot be displayed" message.

I'm suspicious this may connected to SP2 as I have had similar problems. I
recently had to replace my motherboard and moved from one with an nVidia
chipset to a VIA chipset. My internet connection which previously worked
perfectly well on SP2 wouldn't work afterwords. It would show as being
connected and webpages/e-mail could be used fine for about a minute
afterwhich it gave the "page cannot be displayed" message as my parents are
getting. I tried reinstalling windows from scratch and found that the
connection worked fine under SP1 but then failed under SP2. After rolling
back to SP1 it works fine again. Under SP2 I tried connecting both using the
USB port and the ethernet port but with no luck on either. I have searched
the internet for a solution but can only find scattered posts from people
who appear to be having the same problem.

My parents problem seems very similar to mine and I think that they have a
similar motherboard.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix it? They only just got broadband and BT
are being very unhelpful. Unsurprisingly they're not pleased about the
possibility of being locked into a 12 month contract for something they
can't use. Obviously with my computer I had the option to go back to SP1 as
everything is stable with it but they don't seem to have the same option.

Apologies for the long post but I'm just trying to think of everything
relevent.

Thanks for any help.

Stewart
