Windows XP Smart Card Reader

Hi,

I was hoping to start looking at Smart Cards for user authentication in a
corporate environment.
As part of this though I was wondering if you can use a Smart Card reader /
card combination on a standalone Windows XP machine (for testing) or it does
have to be part of a Windows 2003 active directory?
Based on any of the above can anyone recommend a fairly good cheap Card
reader for doing some simple testing? I was thinking of putting it on my home
XP setup.

Thanks for your help.

You may already know this, but the new dell computers can come with a smart
card reader built in to the keyboard - mine did. As far as the rest of it
goes (AD and 2003) I'm not as knowledgable - so will let others answer there.

Jarv,

I am currently trying to get a Smart Card authentication system working
on our domain. From what I've seen/read, the default Windows Smart Card
system relies on an underlying PKI to support the certificates,
revocation, etc. associated with smart card authentication. There may
well be third party or other creative solutions out there, but in
general, I think Smart Cards on Windows require a domain.
