windows XP setup

In windows setup just after the format hard drive bit, windows says it is
copying files, there is a blue screen and a red bar going across the screen
showing you the progress.
Is windows simply copying files from my CD to my hard drive or is
it unpacking files and putting them on the hard drive ?

Yes! To both questions. The CD contains both packed files and expanded
files.
