I have been unable to get Windows XP SP2 to do a clean install on this
system. This is a system that I am building up for the first time.

Windows install works fine until it reaches the step to reboot the
system and then go into graphical mode to finish up the install. When
the system reboots, I get an "OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND" error
message.

The system POSTs fine, boots into DOS fine. Using the LSI's menu, I
reformatted and verified the hard drive. No errors. I have also
verified in the LSI menu that the hard drive is a boot device. In the
ASUS BIOS menu, "SCSI" is the first on the boot order list.

As part of the boot-up process, the system displays the list of SCSCI
devices, and correctly displays the hard drive as a boot device.

I've checked the usual sites, and googled, but there is no specific
information on this problem. Am I the first person in web-land to
have this problem?

What is my next step?

The forums at 2cpu.com is one place to look for help.

http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?threadid=29828

On page 3 of that thread, there is at least one guy
running SCSI:

"My Enermax 433 runs my a7m266-d along
with an Elite 1600 scsi u160 raid controller,
three ibm ultrastar u160 18gig scs drives,
and my Adaptec 29160 runs three scsi cdroms
(1 40x plextor, 1 cdrw, 1 dvd, all 80p scsi )."

I notice in the manual, there is a BIOS setting:
"Other Boot Device Select"

Have you tried setting that to SCSI ? I think that
setting may allow a SCSI card onboard BIOS to get
loaded at POST and registered as a source of
readable sectors.

ok if I understand this, you have installed windows on the hard drive but no
boot on
reboot. on the second boot go into the bios and make sure you set the hard
drive to boot.
save settings and see if that works.
I have a board that if I don't do this on it keeps going to the cdrom and no
boot.

If you have IDE drives as well, setup is installing ntldr there.

That error message comes from the system BIOS
when there are no IDE/SCSI active primary partitions.
