windows XP seems to do funny (and not so funny) things!

This problem is related to another problme that I have posted sometime back;
that was related to Xp looping at boot-up stage.

Since that problem was not resolved, I had to reinstall the XP operating
system and the installation resulted in multiple o/s; as I was scared of
wiping out files that I might have needed, I did not go in for formatting of
the partition. once I knew the new installation was reasonably working, I had
removed all but one of the o/s installations. this is the history.

here is my problem: when I wanted to validate my o/s software with microsoft
validation routine, the system returns an error "your installation did not
pass the validation test". This installation was using the same software/key
that I had used for the previous installation too and the previous one had
passed the test. So it cannot be that this will be counterfeit (unless my
understanding is incorrect).

what could be the reason an what is the way out ? if the solution requires
formatting, I am prepared to do that too, as the message and the tedium bug
me greatly.

thanks for your help.
